Kimblee doesn't only makes bombs with his tatoos : I think about the little chick he creates on the wirst of the prison gardian or also about the decomposition of snow he makes when he is in Briggs. Maybe the philosopher stone helps, but maybe not.
On the tome 19 Ed analyses Kimblee's circles and it sounds nothing like "he only can creates explosions". Kimblee has the symbol of the moon and the sun (symbol of silver and gold), and the triangles combinated are the 4 elements. That's all : and it's probably enough to allow him to make all kind of transmutations from what we can compare to the other alchemists circles. So I think you should broaden your definition of his skills. (Tho I agree on the fact it can be debated since the moon and the sun are in alchemy what can produce sulphur, an element of the explosion... But I'm not even sure about this last thing.) And the inscriptions doesn't count since we can't read it xP
